River Naver Salmon Fishing

Salmon Fishing on the River Naver

The river Naver flows from Loch Naver and enters the sea on the north coast of Scotland at Bettyhill, eighteen miles to the north. The river Naver rivals the Helmsdale for the number salmon caught each season and the fishing is also, as on the Helmsdale, in high demand and not easy to access. The lower beat, however, is reserved for the local angling club and a limited number of daily permits are available to visitors. The fishing for both salmon and sea trout can be excellent on the lower association beat of the River Naver.

Visitor permits are limited for the salmon fishing on the association water (they can be purchased, on a first-come-first-served basis, at The Store, Bettyhill) but there is no such restriction for the sea trout fishing permits on the tidal water, which are readily available from the store. Fishing can also be had on Loch Naver, where spring salmon may be caught, mainly by trolling, the best month usually being April. Fishing can also be had on the Rivers Mudale and Mallart. Enquiries should be directed to the Altnaharra hotel, who also own the fishing on the river Mudale, above Loch Naver.

Note:  the maps on this website are extracts from the Bartholomew “Half Inch” map series dating back to the middle of the twentieth century. There have been many changes since the maps were made, and much of the human detail, e.g. buildings and roads, will have changed over the period. It is to be hoped, however, that the unique character of our Scottish rivers, and the trout and salmon in them, will not have altered too dramatically over the years and that they may still offer the wonderful fishing prospects of days gone by. Bearing the above in mind, anyone planning a fishing or walking trip in Scotland is advised to equip themselves with a compass and the appropriate up-to-date Ordnance Survey map, the most useful for the angler probably being the Landranger series, scale 1:50,000. For Strath Naver, see O.S. map number 10.
