River Dionard Salmon Fishing

Salmon Fishing on the River Dionard

A productive north Sutherland river set in the magnificently wild scenery of the north west highlands of Scotland, the river Dionard flows from Loch Dionard northwards to enter the sea in the Kyle of Durness. While the loch itself has a good reputation for sea trout, the river produces good numbers of salmon and grilse in the summer, as well as the more numerous sea trout.

The upper part of the river is private but fishing may be had on parts of the lower river. The Dionard is a spate river, requiring rain to give of its best but, on a falling spate salmon and sea trout can be caught in good numbers. The main runs enter the river from June onwards, with August perhaps the best month for salmon. Enquiries should be directed to the Cape Wrath Hotel, Durness.

Note:  the maps on this website are extracts from the Bartholomew “Half Inch” map series dating back to the middle of the twentieth century. There have been many changes since the maps were made, and much of the human detail, e.g. buildings and roads, will have changed over the period. It is to be hoped, however, that the character of our Scottish rivers, and the trout and salmon in them, will not have altered too dramatically over the years and that they may still offer the wonderful fishing prospects of days gone by. Bearing the above in mind, anyone planning a fishing or walking trip in Scotland is advised to equip themselves with a compass and the appropriate up-to-date Ordnance Survey map, the most useful for the angler probably being the Landranger series, scale 1:50,000. For the River Dionard, see O.S. map number 10.
